Dental oversupply not evident in rural Queensland

Two reports this week suggested that, while there may be a current (or looming) oversupply of dentists, no-one has told the population of Queensland. The Queensland government is examining ways to keep dentists in the public system, but the problem of doing so has been highlighted by two cases, one in Warwick in the state's south-east, and the other in the state's south west.

Integrated health research centres for Australia

This article by Garry L R Jennings and Michael K Walsh appeared in MJA Medical Journal of Australia recently.

Embedding research into health care organisations improves outcomes, but will require unique, flexible models for success

It will come as little surprise to those who work in the health care sector that the Australian health system is highly fragmented. At the coalface, we have a wide variety of service providers, including public hospitals, primary care providers, aged care providers, private sector operators and many non-profit organisations and charities. Their work is complementary to, and interdependent with, the activities of teaching and research institutions such as universities and independent medical research institutes that help provide innovation and evidence-based models of illness prevention and health care.

ADA condemns fluoride silence

The Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) has condemned the deafening silence from the major political parties on the importance and oral health benefits of water fluoridation throughout the Federal Election campaign.

Dr Karin Alexander, Federal President of the ADA, said: "We understand that the Federal Government does not have direct power over water supplies. However, that does not mean the future Federal Government has the right to stand idly by while Queensland and NSW divest their responsibility to public health. The Federal Government should not allow Local Councils to be swayed by fringe groups who peddle fear, innuendo and conspiracy theories to remove fluoride or discontinue its use from water supplies.

"The political parties during this election campaign have so far failed to take the lead and combat these developments. We expect more.

Redfern All Blacks juniors benefit from mouth guards

Souths Juniors club, the Redfern All Blacks, this week had five grades, ranging from under 6's to under 14's, fitted out with individually moulded mouth guards in an attempt to raise awareness about the importance of oral care.

The initiative, supported by the University of Sydney's Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, Souths Cares, the Centre for Oral Health Strategy and Colgate, saw around 60 Redfern All Blacks players fitted with the mouth guards at Alexandria Park.

Members of the Rabbitohs' first grade squad were there to oversee proceedings while also rubbing shoulders with junior players.

New reports challenges six-month rule

A new review by the Deeble Institute has identified an absence of evidence supporting the widely-accepted recommendation that you visit the dentist every six months. The review found that "fixed recall intervals appear to be based on historical patterns of dental care, and there is little high-quality evidence evaluating how often people should have dental visits. These sources of evidence suggest that it might be better to move away from fixed-interval recalls to a risk-based approach.
