1. Purpose of the collection
The Library's collection in physiology and pharmacology supports the teaching and research of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. This department is part of the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences.
2. Primary user groups served
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology offers courses in physiology and pharmacology from the gene level through to the cellular and systems levels to intact humans and other organisms. There is a strong focus on molecular and cellular physiology and pharmacology.
The research areas of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology include:
- Neurobiology
- Ion Transport
- Reproductive Endocrinology
- Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Pharmacology
- Molecular Toxicology
- Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics
- Molecular and Cellular Biology
3. Description of the collection
The collection is adequate to support the undergraduate, postgraduate and research needs of the department.
The Library has many electronic databases that are accessible in all branch libraries and from home or office. These include:
- Medline
- Embase: Drugs and Pharmacology
- Web of Science
- Biological Abstracts
- Chemical Abstracts
The Library also has electronic access to collections of full text journals including:
- Cambridge University Press journals
- Academic Press online library
(IDEAL)
- Blackwell Science journals)
- InfoTrac Expanded Academic ASAP
- LINK
(Springer publications)
- ScienceDirect
(Elsevier)
4. Interdisciplinary relationships
The Department shares common interests and has collaborative projects with the Departments of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the School of Pharmacy. Collaborative projects involve the Vision, Touch and Hearing Research Centre, Australian Equine Blood Typing Research Laboratory, Centre for Molecular and Cellular Biology, National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology and the Centre for Drug Design and Development.
Most of the resources for the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology are available at the Biological Sciences Library, but this is supplemented by material held at the Health Sciences libraries – Herston Health Sciences Library, Princess Alexander Hospital Library, UQ/Mater McAuley Hospital Library and the Dentistry Library.
There is no coordination in collecting with other institutions in south east Queensland or elsewhere in Australia.
5. Scope of current collecting
1. Languages collected
The physiology and pharmacology collection contains mainly English language material but with a selection of material in other languages.
2. Types (formats) of material collected
Physiology and pharmacology material is collected in all forms.
3. Publication dates
The library collects mainly current materials in the fields of physiology and pharmacology taught or researched at the University. Monographs and serials are purchased retrospectively when academic or research staff requests them.
4. Conspectus
