1. Purpose of the collection

The library's collection in pharmacy supports the teaching and research of the School of Pharmacy which is located within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

2. Primary user groups served

The School of Pharmacy offers courses in pharmacy and clinical pharmacy: Bachelor of Pharmacy; Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours); Master of Pharmacy.

The major research areas in the School of Pharmacy are: Pharmaceutical drug delivery; Clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; Social and behavioural aspects of pharmacy practice; Physical pharmacy; Pharmaceutical analysis; Drug action in the central and peripheral nervous system; Optimising the clinical use of medications; Pharmacotherapeutics; Health outcome evaluation; Public health.

3. Description of existing collection

The collection has adequate resources for supporting all undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs. It can also support advanced independent study as well as the research needs of the school.

The library has many electronic databases that are accessible in all branch libraries and from home or office. These include: Medline; Embase: Drugs and Pharmacology; Embase: Pharmacoeconomics and Disease Management; Web of Science; International Pharmaceutical Abstracts; Biological Abstracts; Chemical Abstracts.

The library also has electronic access to collections of full text journals including: Cambridge University Press journals; Academic Press online library (IDEAL); SwetsNet (includes Blackwell journals); InfoTrac Expanded Academic ASAP; LINK (Springer publications); ScienceDirect (Elsevier).

4. Interdisciplinary relationships

The School of Pharmacy shares some common areas of interest with the School of Biomedical Sciences, Centre for Drug Design and Development, School of Psychology and the Graduate School of Medicine.

Most resources for Pharmacy are available at the Biological Sciences Library and are supplemented by material held at the medical libraries – Herston Health Sciences Library, Princess Alexander Hospital Library and the UQ/Mater McAuley Hospital Library.

The pharmacy collection contains principally English language material.

2. Types (formats) of material collected:

Pharmacy material is collected in all forms, both physical and electronic.

3. Publication dates:

The library collects mainly current materials in the fields of pharmacy that are taught or researched at the University. Monographs and serials are purchased retrospectively, when members of academic staff specially request them.

4. Conspectus:

The collection was rated at 3B at the last Conspectus assessment.
