1. Purpose of the collection
The Biological Sciences Library collection in this area is intended to support the teaching and research activities of the Department of Botany.
2. Primary user groups served
The Department of Botany offers Undergraduate teaching at 3 levels.
- Level 1 (BL) subjects are taught across the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences.
- At Level 2 and 3, Departmental (BT) subjects are taught which introduce students to more specialised areas of plant science.
Postgraduates can enrol for Research or Coursework degrees.
There are seven broad areas of study within the Department:
- Plant physiology and biochemistry
- Ecology and tropical forest biology
- Evolution and genetics
- Plant Pathology
- Plant molecular biology
- Marine botany
- Plant molecular genetics and genomics
3. Description of the collection
University of Queensland Library has very strong research level collections in palaeobotany and palynology. At research level is the Australian botany collection and, closely related to botany, the collection in soils and soil sciences. Almost reaching research level is the collection in conservation of Australian natural resources.
The Library has many electronic databases that are accessible in all branch libraries and from home or office. These include:
- Agricola
- Biological Abstracts
- CABI
- Web of Science
- Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
The library also has electronic access to collections of full text journals including:
- Cambridge University Press journals
- Academic Press online library
(IDEAL)
- Blackwell Science journals)
- InfoTrac Expanded Academic ASAP
- LINK
(Springer publications)
- ScienceDirect
(Elsevier)
4. Interdisciplinary relationships
A number of research areas in botany are also collected by other departments, in particular ecology and tropical forest biology, which is substantially collected by and for Entomology and to a lesser extent Zoology as well as by Botany. The Department of Botany shares common areas of interest with other schools within the Faculty e.g. Entomology and Zoology, as well as other departments and centres within the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science.
Relevant resources for the Department of Botany are held at both the Biological Sciences Library and the Gatton Library.
5. Scope of current collecting
1. Languages collected

2. Types (formats) of material collected
None
3. Publication dates

4. Conspectus
In the Conspectus review of the collection most of the lines are clustered at 3B and 2A with the large number at less than 2A largely relating to regional areas or specific fungi where there are many gaps. Therefore in some areas the collection is only adequate to support introductory undergraduate instruction and in others is adequate for most postgraduate coursework.
