1. Purpose of the collection
The Biological Sciences Library collection in this area is intended to support the teaching and research activities of the Department of Biochemistry. The Department of Biochemistry is located in the School of Microbial and Molecular Sciences in the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences.
2. Primary user groups served
The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate courses in biochemistry to Applied Science (Biotechnology and Human Movement Studies), Dentistry, Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Science and Veterinary Science students. The Department has a strong postgraduate enrolment. Members of the Department undertake a wide variety of research projects covering various aspects of biochemistry and molecular biology. The Department has a strong national and international reputation for teaching and research.
Broad areas of study within the Department are:
- Metabolic and cellular biochemistry
- Protein structure, function and engineering
- Molecular and cellular biology
- Molecular genetics of disease
- Protein trafficking and signal transduction
- Biotechnology
- Biomedical effects of alcohol abuse
- Plant molecular genetics
- Medical and nutritional biochemistry and metabolism
- Veterinary biochemistry
3. Description of the collection
The collection supports postgraduate and independent research as well as postgraduate coursework and undergraduate teaching. It is particularly strong in neurobiochemistry, molecular and cellular biology and other areas of research.
The Library has many electronic databases that are accessible in all branch libraries and from home or office. These include:
- Medline
- CAB
- Biological Abstracts
- Web of Science
- Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
- SciFinder Scholar
The Library also has electronic access to collections of full text journals including:
- Cambridge University Press journals
- Academic Press online library (IDEAL)
- Blackwell Science journals
- InfoTrac Expanded Academic ASAP
- LINK (Springer publications)
- ScienceDirect (Elsevier)
4. Interdisciplinary relationships
Biochemistry and molecular biology lie at the interface between chemistry, the biological and the health sciences. Other departments and faculties including Microbiology & Parasitology, Physiology & Pharmacology, School of Life Sciences, Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science, and the Faculty of Health Sciences also collect a number of research areas in biochemistry.
Research staff associated with the Department work in the Centre for Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Clinical Research Centre and the Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Plant Pathology.
Members of the Department also maintain ongoing research collaborations with members of other University Departments and Centres, particularly the Departments of Botany, Chemistry, Entomology, Medicine, Microbiology & Parasitology, Pharmacy, Physiology & Pharmacology, Surgery, the Centre for Magnetic Resonance and the Drug Design and Development Centre.
5. Scope of current collecting
1. Languages collected
The biochemistry collection contains principally English language material.
2. Types (formats) of material collected
The Library collects mainly current materials in the fields of biochemistry that are taught or researched at the University of Queensland. Monographs and serials are purchased retrospectively when academic or research staff requests them.
3. Publication dates
None
4. Conspectus
At the last Conspectus the collection was rated at 3B with a research level collection (4) in neurobiochemistry.
