Using Library workstations
The Library provides workstations for student use throughout our branch libraries. They are specially configured for high use and so may function differently from your personal computer or laptop.
You will require:
- Your student ID and password
- a USB device if you wish to save files
Computer availability
Library
computers can be heavily used during teaching periods and you may be required
to queue for a computer. You can check the availability of Library workstations
online.
- Log-in to My Library
- Select the Library you would like to view in the Home Library box
- Click on a level button below to see the floor map of computers
Computers in eZone training rooms
The Library runs a range of training sessions and may reserve Library eZones for this purpose. During training eZone computers are unavailable for general use.
- You can view the training schedule for a given day on the wall outside the training room.
- Please do not growl at our staff if they politely ask you to clear the room for training.
Select Operating System
iMACs in the Library can
start either in Windows or the MAC operating system. The Welcome screen will
display the software available in each operating system.
- Click an Operating System Logo to log in
- Switching between the systems will require the system to restart. This will take a few minutes - so please be patient.
Log-in to a Library workstation
UQ Student
Sign in with your student number and password, e.g.:
- Username: s1264567
- Password: The same password you use for mySI-net, my.UQ etc.
Guest
Guests have restricted access to the computer and its software. Sign in with your guest username and no password:
- Username: guest
- Password: Guest accounts do not have a password.
The Keyboard and Mouse
If you are used to a Windows style keyboard you may find the MAC keyboard and mouse a little confusing.

Keyboard Tips
- Command on the MAC keyboard is the Windows key
- F14 on the MAC keyboard is the Windows Print Screen key
- Clear on the MAC number pad is the Windows NUM Lock key
Mouse Tips
The MAC mouse has 5 buttons:
- Left and right click (either side of the central scroller)
- Pressure button either side of the mouse
Language Support
There is a choice of over 18 input languages on our workstations. They include european languages like Danish, French, Greek and Italian as well as:
- Arabic
- Farsi
- Japanese
- Sanskrit
- Chinese (PRC and Taiwanese)
- Hebrew
- Korean
- Tamil
Change your input language
To change the language:
- Windows: Click the dark blue EN box in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- MAC: Click Apple > System Preferences > Languages > Text
These changes will be automatically wiped when you log out.
Request an additional input language
If you feel that we should support an additional input language please send us some feedback.
Available Software
The Library provides a standard set of software on our workstations. Note: we cannot provide software for personal use. Guests have restricted access to computer functions and software.
- A range of web browsers
- Microsoft Office for Windows and MAC
- Open Office on MAC
- Endnote and refworks
- iLife suite (iMovie, Garage band etc) on MAC
- Specialist application on Windows via ZEN
Restrictions and high use customisations
Log off / Auto log off
- Always log out of the workstation, and take your USB, when you are finished to protect your student and personal accounts and files.
- UQ Library workstations are configured to log out after 15 minutes of inaction. You can prevent this by moving the mouse occasionally.
- You will receive an popup reminder if you haven't removed your USB on log out.
- The workstations wipe your user profile before the next user logs in. No files or customisations will remain on that computer.
File Saving
Windows will not allow you to save files to the computer.
MAC will not retain any files you have saved to the computer when you log off.
- You will require a USB device, cloud storage or can use your student
network storage space to save your files.
- Guests cannot save files on Windows, including saving to USB.
- Guests can work with Open Office on MAC including saving to USB.
Right click on Windows
You cannot right click outside of specification applications in the Windows environment.
- You can find a lot of the tools you're looking for within a Windows
Explorer window, for example:
- Creating a new folder
- Cutting and pasting a file etc.
