Software Support

Ask I.T. supports UQ students in the use of the following software:

  • Microsoft and Apple Operating Systems (file management, saving, printing, disks).
  • Microsoft Office (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint).
  • OpenOffice (Write, Calc, Impress). *
  • Referencing software (EndNote, RefWorks).
  • Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari).

* The OpenOffice suite is a free download, offering word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and database capabilities plus improved compatibility with most Microsoft Office formats, PDF and Macromedia Flash.

Training Classes

Ask I.T. offers training classes in:

  • Computing @ UQ - Essential overview of the student IT services provided by the University of Queensland and the UQ Library.
  • File I.T. - Comprehensive overview of file management and version control. Electronic filing for individuals using recommended techniques, access to Drives from Library workstations and using your free student data storage space on and off campus.
  • mySI-net and my.UQ Help - Assistance to enrol using the mySI-net online enrolment system and enquiries about using the my.UQ student portal.
  • Introduction to eLearning (Blackboard) - Essential introduction to the UQ eLearning system "Blackboard" covering the online components of your courses.

We also offer training classes in the following Microsoft Office applications:

  • Word Level 1 - Recommended for students with no or little experience with Word. You will learn how to:
    • create and save Word documents.
    • understand and perform the most important editing techniques (including cut, copy and paste).
    • format text, paragraphs and pages.
    • print
    • use online help to locate help topics
  • Word Level 2 - Recommended for Word users with a basic to intermediate level of experience. You will learn how to:
    • format paragraphs with bullets or numbers.
    • format a document in columns.
    • insert and manipulate tables.
    • insert and manipulate images.
    • insert footnotes and endnotes.
    • insert page numbers.
  • Word Advanced - Recommended for Word users with at least an intermediate level of experience who are creating a very long document such as a thesis. You will learn how to:
    • use styles to format your document consistently.
    • use the Outline view to create headings.
    • create an automatic table of contents.
    • insert cross-references to items in the document.
    • understand the issues involved with creating a long document as a single file or as many separate files.
    • convert your document to PDF.
  • Excel Level 1 - A beginner's guide to essential spreadsheet concepts and skills. You will learn how to:
    • design and create a simple spreadsheet.
    • enter data, labels, formulas and simple function.
    • format and sort data.
    • present data in tables and charts.
    • use online help to locate help topics.
  • Excel Level 2 - A guide to using Excel tools to analyse and consolidate data to present more meaningful information. These features will assist with report and assignment preparation. You will learn how to:
    • use relative and absolute cell references.
    • use goal seek.
    • create scenarios with data.
    • create complex charts.
    • filter and Sort data.
    • use online help to locate help topics.
  • PowerPoint Level 1 - Create effective presentations with ease. You will learn how to:
    • create, edit, print and display a slide presentation.
    • apply templates.
    • apply animations.
    • insert images, charts and other objects.
    • use online help to locate help topics.
  • PowerPoint Level 2 - A guide to enhancing and presenting slideshows effectively. You will learn how to:
    • use and edit the slide master.
    • use drawing tools to create diagrams.
    • reference external charts and data.
    • create links to other slides and external sources.
    • add media clips and action buttons.
    • use online help to locate help topics
