File Storage

All students of the University are provided with 100MBs of free data storage space in conjunction with their Internet Access Account. More details about student accounts are available from UQconnect. The UQ student data storage space can be accessed from any Library workstation as well as from home.

Storage Space

How do I access it in the Library?

Automatic Login

When you sign into a library workstation and authenticate successfully, your free student data storage drive will be automatically mapped for you.

Your free student data storage drive appears in "My Computer" as a network drive labelled s<your student number> on "UQ Central File Server (soefile)" (H:).

You can save files to this drive in the same way that you can save data to a USB flash drive. For further information on saving files see Computing Tips.

It is VERY advisable to save work both to your free student data storage drive and to some other removable media such as a USB flash drive. DON'T FORGET TO LOG OUT when you have finished your session! (Click "Start" button > "Log Off user", or double-click the Log Off icon on the desktop).

Note: If your login is not successful you may be automatically logged into the relevant workstation as a "Guest" user by default. You will not have USB drive write access or a mapped free student data storage drive.

What if my login doesn't work?

If you find that your login fails and you cannot connect to your free student data storage, there may be a problem with your password. This may be the case even if you can successfully login to my.UQ, especially if your password contains the "*" or "&" characters.

You can fix the problem yourself by changing the password in my.UQ. Simply log in to my.UQ, click on the Personalise tab and then select myDetails.

At this page you can enter your username, your current password and then either your current password again or a new one if you wish to change it. Then click Change password. This action should synchronise your password through all ITS systems and you should not encounter further problems. If you do, phone or visit the Ask I.T. desk so that we can provide further assistance.

Do I have to use it?

No, you do not have to use it. However, students will find this space to be very useful for backing up important data, such as their thesis or assignments. For further information on backing up your files click here.

Remember to Logout

When you have finished working at a Library workstation, you must log off:

  • Click "Start" button > "Log Off user", or double-click the Log Off icon on the desktop.
  • If you do not log off, your personal free student data storage will remain accessible to others.

What about members of the public?

If you are a member of the public (that is, a Guest user), you do not have access to personal free student data storage. You can:

  1. Access the UQ website and Library Catalog or files on a USB flash drive.
  2. Print materials

Note: Guest users do not have USB "write" access - in other words, you may view files from a USB drive, but may not make changes to those files or save files to your USB drive.

Can I access my free data storage space from home?

Yes, you can. Refer to the Ask I.T. page myFiles for more information. See also the VPN Client page to map your free student storage space from home or University on either your laptop or desktop computer. Ipswich students using the Ipswich free student data storage space can obtain further information here.
