VPN Client - Data Storage

The VPN Client is a tool that enables your H Drive to be mapped on your computer, either laptop or desktop, so that when you connect to the Internet, you can access and work on the files saved to your free student data storage space.

The VPN Client is available on the UQConnect CD, which is available from any Ask I.T Desk or downloaded here.

To install the client, load the disk and follow the prompts, or view the UQConnect guide here.

To connect:

  1. Ensure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Go to Start » Cisco Systems VPN Client » VPN Client.
  3. Click on the Connect Icon at the top.
  4. Log in using your UQ username and password.
  5. A padlock icon will appear in the taskbar (bottom right) of your computer.

To map and view your free student data storage space:

  1. Open up a Windows Explorer window by doing a right click on the Start Button and choosing Explore.
  2. From the Menu at the top choose Tools » Map Network Drive.
  3. Choose which drive letter is free and you would like to use from the Drive box.
  4. In the Folder box type:
    1. All Campuses except Ipswich students - \\soefile\s1234567 (insert your username instead of s1234567).
    2. Ipswich Campus students - \\uqistudent\s1234567 (insert your username instead of s1234567)
  5. You can choose to tick the box to connect your network drive on startup. Please see note below about this option.
  6. Enter your UQ username and password (inserting UQ\ in front of your username) at the next prompt.
  7. Your student data storage space will now be mapped.

Note: If choosing to map your network drive on startup your computer will always look for this drive whether you are connected to the Internet or not. If not connected to the Internet, there will be a message saying not all your network drives could be connected. This is not a problem, as it is preferable to having to map your drive everytime you want to access it.

To disconnect:

  1. Double click on the padlock icon in the taskbar. This will open a VPN Client Staus box. Click on the Disconnect icon on the top left.
