Wireless

Eduroam

Wireless Internet is widely available across UQ campuses. Students and staff of the University should configure and use the secure on-campus wireless network Eduroam. UQ visitors should apply for UQ Visitor access.

Eduroam Wireless at UQ - UQL YTV

A short movie discussing Eduroam Wireless Internet at the University of Queensland.

Configure your device:

The network can be accessed at:

  • Brisbane CityCats
  • Mater Hospital
  • Griffith, QUT and other Queensland Universities
  • Universities in the Asia Pacific region including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan
  • Universities in 36 European countries
  • Universities in the United States of America and Canada

While Eduroam encrypts your wireless traffic between your device and the base station, it does not negate the need for appropriate system security like a virus scanner and caution when dealing with suspicious e-mails etc.

At UQ:

  • Eduroam allows full access to the Internet including Skype and RealPlayer, which will not work with UQconnect. It also allows trouble free use of such programs as MSN and eLearning tools, which have also experienced problems over on-campus networks.
  • No matter whether you are using Eduroam at UQ, nationally or internationally, Eduroam only requires you to sign in once, rather than having to sign in every single time you connect. It automatically signs you into the UQ Traffic Management System as soon as you connect to the Eduroam network. Your student download quota will continue to work the same way as before.
  • If you have an iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad, after setup Eduroam will eliminate the need to constantly sign in.

Help and Troubleshooting

To connect to the UQ Wireless Network you will need:

  • A wireless enabled laptop.

OR

  • Or a compatible mobile device such as a PDA, Tablet PC, Mobile Phone, iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

Location of the laptop wireless adaptor on/off switch: If you are not able to see a wireless network while in a wifi zone check that your wireless card is enabled on your laptop. Different models of laptops use different methods to enable/disable the wireless connection. Examples can be a physical switch on the side or front of the laptop, a keyboard combination such as "Function + F8", while some models utilise a touch sensitive switch near the laptop display.

If your laptop does not have a wireless network adaptor, or it is incompatible or just does not work you can purchase a new one from most computer stores.

Website Access: When you are connected to the UQ wireless network, you should be able to access websites through your web browser. Sites that belong to the UQ Domain i.e. sites that end in "uq.edu.au" are un-metered and can be accessed without using download quota. Some sites that can be used for educational purposes including myMail+ email, Google, Google Earth, Youtube, and Yahoo, are also un-metered.

If you have signed into Eduroam, you will not need to login to the UQ Internet Traffic Management System. Otherwise, when you access a website that is external to UQ you will be re-directed to the UQ Login page.

  • In order to proceed beyond this point, you will be prompted to authenticate at the UQ Login page. Type in your UQ Student Username and Password. This information is securely transmitted via wireless in the same way Internet banking details are sent across the Internet. Look for the padlock icon at the bottom of your browser window.
  • Depending on your browser security settings you may also receive a notification that you are leaving the secure Traffic Management page and that any pages you visit are not necessarily encrypted. Click "Yes" to continue.
  • To procede to your external web page click on the Green Continue button

Connecting to the Wireless Network in the Toowoomba and Rockhampton Hospitals: In order to connect to the Wireless Network in Toowoomba and Rockhampton Hospitals, you need to:

Please note there are no UQ VPN clients as yet for PDA devices or the 64 bit Windows Operating System.

Important Notes: While traffic from UQ sites is free, some online teaching modules (such as external links in Blackboard or accessing your email via https://outlook.com may count towards your download quota.

UQconnect have provided a website that allows you to check if a site is unmetered. Login to the UQ Login page and click on the second tab to the Right (Traffic Type Lookup), type in the IP address or the website you intend to visit e.g. www.uq.edu.au.

Download: To Download is to receive data from a remote system, such as a website, FTP server, or other similar system. Just by opening up and browsing internet web pages, you are downloading data. You can check how close you are to your quota limit by logging on to my.UQ and viewing the myQuota area. If you reach your quota limit you will be unable to access sites beyond the UQ Domain. However it is possible to purchase more quota from UQconnect.

University Code of Practice: All access to the University network is subject to the University's Internet Code of Practice. All users must read and comply with this document.

Printing Wirelessly to the University of Queensland Library branch printers: Printing to University of Queensland Library branch printers is available from laptops, home or offices. Instructions on how to print from computers located in library branches are available on the printing help pages.

Please note: This service is not available to the UQ Library Ipswich branch. To print wirelessly at Ipswich you need to install the UQ VPN client and setup the printer manually. Contact the Ipswich Ask I.T. Help Desk Staff for instructions. Alternatively save your data onto a CD, portable USB drive or email the document to your student email address and open the file and print from a library workstation.
