What are Blackboard Assignments?

Blackboard Assignment is an electronic assignment submission tool within Learn.UQ. The system is distinct from TurnItIn for text based assignments in that this system allows for the submission of Excel, PowerPoint or multimedia files etc.

Read the instructions carefully

The instructions should provide important details, such as:

  • The files required for your submission
    • The number of files, how the files should be named and the required file formats.
  • The method for submitting specific types of files, for example:
    • To upload files from your computer use the Browse my computer button rather than the textbox.
    • To link to web content use the textbox editor
  • Number of allowed submission attempts
  • Information on group submissions
  • Information on late assignments
  • The procedure to follow if something goes wrong with your submission or you submit the wrong file(s)

Important

  • You must click Submit to send your work for assessment. Academic staff will not see the files if you have merely saved them as a submission in progress.
  • Files that are submitted CANNOT be retrieved for edit and re-submission. Once submitted they are delivered to the course co-ordinator.
  • It is your responsibility to check the Submission History and confirm your assignment was successfully submitted.

Should files be submitted?

Files should be included using the Attach file area below the text editor. This enables you to easy attach multiple files to your submission. The text editor should not be used to attach files - only linked to online content like a Prezi, a YouTube video or a Kaltura video.

Submit your assignment

To submit a Blackboard assignment:

  • Log-in to Learn.UQ at https://learn.uq.edu.au
  • Go the the Assignment or Assessment section of your course and click the assignment title link

Click the assessment title within your Learn.UQ course.

  • Read the instructions carefully before you submit to make sure your files are properly named and organised.

Read the assignment information carefully. It will contain important details and submission requirements.

  • Include your materials using the text editor and the "Attach File" area below.

Upload or link to your resources. Using the file upload button or the text editor depending on the type of material.

Include your files or content

File submissions

Files should be attached using the Browse My Computer button and not put into the text editor.

  • Click the Browse My Computer button below the text editor
  • Locate and select the file
  • Repeat the process for any additional files you need to attach

Click Do not attach to remove any file you do not wish to submit.

Click Browse my Computer to attach files.

Link submissions

Link submissions - i.e. to a prezi or other online application should be included in the text editor using the hyperlink button. Ensure you test your link to make sure the content is available.

  • Type and then highlight a descriptive submission link
  • Then click the Hyperlink button in the text editor

Type and highlight some link text and then click the Hyperlink button.

  • Paste the link into the URL field
    Use Right click > Paste or CTRL + V (Windows) or CMD + V (MAC)
  • Optionally: enter a title which will appear when someone hovers their mouse over the link
  • Click Submit

Paste in the web link and add a title if required. Click Submit.

  • Your link will be inserted. Use the Preview tool in the text editor to test your link

Your link will be inserted. Don't forget to check that it works.

You can use the Preview button to test web links and ensure they're active and accessible.

Video submissions (using Mashups)

Kaltura videos

Once you have uploaded a video and included it into an assignment submission - do not delete the video or your instructor will be unable to mark your work!

  • Click the Add Mashup button > Kaltura Media

Select Kaltura Media on the Add Mashup button on the editor.

EITHER

  • Select a pre-uploaded video from My Media

Select a movie from your My Media area or upload a new video file.

OR

  • Click the Add Media dropdown > Upload media or record from webcam menulet and follow the instructions to upload a Kaltura video

Click the Add Media button to upload a video during assignment submission.

  • Adjust the media settings and press Submit

Press Submit to embed the media item into the Text Editor.

  • The Kaltura video will be added to the text editor to be part of the assignment submission

Your Kaltura video will be linked into your assignment submission.

YouTube content

  • Click the Add Mashup button > YouTube movie

Click the Add Mashup button.

  • Search for your movie by title and click Go
    You may need to refine your search if the movie does not show up in the search results.

Search for your movie.

  • Click Select to pick your movie out of the search results

Click Select on the search result.

  • Adjust the settings as required and click Submit

Just the insertion settings and click Submit.

  • A structured link to your YouTube movie will be added to the text editor

A link with additional info will be added to the text editor.

Complete the submission

  • Include a comment about the submission if required.

  • Click Submit to complete the submission

  • You submission will be completed and you will be able to review your submission.

Learn.UQ will confirm your submission was received.

To resubmit

If you need to resubmit for some reason and resubmissions are allowed:

  • Return to the assessments section of your Learn.UQ course and click the assignment title
  • Click Start New Submission and follow the submission instructions

Click the Start New Submission button.
