Accessing the internet

Your student internet account

Currently enrolled UQ students have a monthly allocation of download quota to access UQ's fast wired and wireless internet. If you are under 18 you will be required to have your parent or guardian sign a form giving you permission to access Internet services at UQ.

Check your remaining monthly quota

In general sites hosted by the UQ domain are unmetered whereas sites external to the UQ Domain are generally metered (they reduce your remaining quota). There are some exceptions like various academic and news websites.

On the first day of each calendar month the download quota allowance is reset back to its default value with no carry over of unused quota.

Wired internet access

You are not automatically signed in to the Internet when you log-in to a Library or faculty workstation. If you wish to access websites external to UQ, you will need to sign in to the Internet traffic management system with your student number and password.

Your student e-mail, even when accessed through my.UQ, is considered an external website. So if you are having trouble accessing your e-mail from a Library computer - please ensure you have signed in to the Internet.

Log in to the Internet

  • Open a web browser
  • Search, or type a URL, for a non-UQ website

Eduroam wireless internet

Eduroam is the on-campus wireless network. Eduroam provides some extra security by encrypting your connection to the router. You may still require a Virtual Private Network in some locations such as the Toowoomba and Rockhampton Hospitals.
