ISBN allocation

The Library can allocate an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) to material produced by staff and students of The University of Queensland and published by the University and its departments.

An ISBN is allocated to:

printed books and pamphlets
book readings on cassettes
microfiche publications
computer software
educational videos
multi-media kits containing printed material
online publications as advised by the ISBN Agency

Within each category there are eligible and ineligible materials set down by the ISBN Agency. Full details here.

A number will be allocated and a form sent via internal mail. Please fill in the details of your publication.
Send a photocopy of the completed form to Dagnija McAuliffe at the above address and then send the form to the Australian ISBN Agency administered by Thorpe-Bowker:

An application form for an ISBN for a private publication can be obtained online from the Thorpe-Bowker website.

A barcode can also be obtained from Thorpe-Bowker via their website. Once you have your ISBN, you need to fill in the online form. There is a cost involved.

If an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is required, the online form can be filled in and submitted to the National Library of Australia.

The National Library will also provide CIP (Cataloguing-In-Publication) if required. Fill in the online form.

The National Library of Australia also sets out the conditions for legal deposit. Legal deposit is a statutory provision which obliges publishers to deposit copies of their publications in libraries in the country in which they are published. More information is available on the web site.
